Why Do Headlights Turn Yellow in the First Place?

Why Do Headlights Turn Yellow in the First Place?

Wondering why your car's headlights look foggy and yellow? The intense Texas sun is baking the plastic. Here is the science behind oxidation and how to permanently restore them.

If you live in Colleyville or anywhere in the DFW Metroplex, you have probably noticed how quickly cars around here develop cloudy, yellow headlights. It isn't dirt, and it isn't something you can just wash off at the local car wash.

So, what is actually happening to your car?

The Polycarbonate Problem

Unlike classic cars that used glass, modern vehicle headlights are made of polycarbonate plastic. Polycarbonate is incredibly impact-resistant—which is great for surviving highway rocks on I-820—but it is naturally porous and highly sensitive to heat.

To protect this plastic, manufacturers spray on a thin UV-resistant clear coat at the factory.

The Texas Sun vs. Factory Clear Coat

That factory clear coat is no match for the brutal Texas summer sun. Over a few years, intense UV rays bake that protective layer, causing it to break down, peel, and flake off. Once that clear coat is gone, the raw polycarbonate plastic is fully exposed to the sun and oxygen.

This triggers a chemical reaction called oxidation. The plastic physically cooks and degrades, turning that ugly, cloudy yellow color.

How We Fix It

You cannot fix oxidation by wiping a chemical on it, which is why cheap internet hacks never work. The dead plastic must be physically removed.

Our professional headlight restoration service comes directly to your driveway in the MidCities of DFW Texas. We sand, cut and polish the dead, yellowed plastic, returning the lens to a glass-like finish. Finally—and most importantly—we apply a professional-grade UV ceramic coating. This new layer replaces the factory clear coat, permanently locking in the clarity so the Texas sun can't damage it again.
