Safety, Police
Wondering if those yellow, oxidized headlights can get you a ticket? Here is what the Texas Transportation Code says about headlight visibility and why DFW police can pull you over for cloudy lenses.

We get asked this question a lot by drivers in Tarrant County: "My headlights look terrible, but they still turn on. Can I actually get pulled over for them being foggy?"
The short answer is yes.
While you might think of yellowed headlights as just an ugly cosmetic issue, local law enforcement views them as defective safety equipment. Here is exactly what the law says and why ignoring your oxidized headlights could cost you a traffic stop.
What the Texas Transportation Code Says
In Texas, vehicle lighting is strictly regulated by Chapter 547 of the Texas Transportation Code. According to the law, a vehicle must have at least one lamp on each side of the front that emits white light visible from a distance of at least 1,000 feet. Furthermore, your low beams must emit enough light to reveal a person or vehicle at a distance of at least 150 feet ahead.
When your headlight lenses become severely oxidized, the thick, cloudy yellow plastic acts like a wall. It blocks the light from your bulbs from escaping and scatters whatever light does get through. If a police officer determines that your headlights are too dim to meet those legal distance requirements, they have every right to initiate a traffic stop.
The Cost of a Ticket vs. Restoration
Getting pulled over for defective lighting often results in a "Fix-It Ticket" or a fine that can be well over $200. If you receive a fix-it ticket, you are legally required to repair the issue and present proof to the court to avoid further legal trouble. Getting stopped for a lighting problem can also lead to other citations, like if your registration happens to be out of date.
A lot of drivers think the only way to fix this is to spend $1,500+ replacing the entire headlight housing at a DFW dealership. Fortunately, that isn't true.
